Shrink Right Every Time. How To Size Your Shrinkwrap
Posted by Wishpond Power Rangers on
Some might say bubble wraps are the most satisfying form of packaging, especially the way it pops. Here at Knox, we think a little differently. Nothing beats the way our Knox’s Polyolefin Shrink Wraps conform to any shape and any sized product.
Business owners like you deserve more than a satisfying product. You deserve lower costs and higher profits. That’s why our team wants to show you how to optimize your packaging process.
It all starts with choosing the right size of Knox Shrink Wrap. Let’s show you how!
First of all...What is Shrink Wrap?
Shrink Wrap is a highly stretchable plastic that conforms to the shape of your product. Using heat, the shrink wrap fits closely to any shape your throw its way and acts as your first line of defense against dents and scratches.
At Knox, we use Polyolefin Shrink Wraps and Stretch Wraps that are perfectly fit and perfectly priced. Our wraps are FDA approved for use with direct contact with food. This gives you a wide range of uses for you to choose from.
Before you start taking measurements, there are a few questions you want to ask so that you get the best results:
1. What are you wrapping?
It may sound simple, but it’s the most important step along the way. Take note of the size of your product, the measurements all around, and the shape of it before choosing the right wrap. These dimensions matter if you want an even fit without wasting excess film or cutting it too short.
Also, consider any sharp edges that may need a little extra padding for your workers’ and consumers’ safety.
2. How many layers do you need?
Some goods, depending on your industry, require different levels of protection to prevent spoilage or leaks. Take into consideration how many layers of wrapping you may need to keep your perishables safe when making your final measurements.
3. How many products am I shipping?
Knox’s 100 Gauge Shrink Wrap is often used to pair multiple products together for shipment. If you’ve ever been to a wholesale or even your regular supermarket, you may see water bottles, CDs, and other items of similar shapes wrapped in one using our 60 to 75 Gauge Shrink Wraps.
If you’re shipping something larger and farther on pallets, our 80 Gauge Stretch Wrap may be a better solution for you due to its high tensile strength resistance to extreme conditions.
Start Shrinking
Now that we know what you’re shipping, it’s time to start shrinking. In a few steps, you’ll be on your way to getting the right size every time.

Step 2: Know your tools
Depending on the scale of your business, you can use different devices to measure and prepare your packages.
- Small: Heat Guns
- Medium: L Bar Sealers
- Large: Shrink Tunnels
Step 3: Know your formula
Now that you’ve prepped your station, it’s time to move on to measuring your film. Use this easy formula to get started.
Width + Depth x 2 x 1.1÷2 = Centerfold Film Width Needed
Step 4: Leave an inch or two
If you can’t find the exact measurements of your product. It’s best to go to the next size up for optimum results. An inch or two extra is better than an inch or two under. This could be the difference between a little extra film or a wasted roll.
