What industries ship the most freight in the USA?

Posted by Adrián Fernández on

The freight industry is made up of many different parts. Goods are mostly shipped through planes, trains, cargo ships and trucks. Despite the fact that transporting goods via cargo ships tends to take longer, this is the busiest mode of transportation used by the freight industry. This is due to the quantity and weight that can be supported by the ships. The overall cost involved with shipping via cargo ships is also an additional factor. Though planes may be faster, companies are able to get more bang for their buck if they utilise sea instead of air. Can you guess which industries currently ship the most freight in the USA?

Which industries ship the most?

Let’s take a look at the top five.

Automobile

Car Transport - ShipKnox
The automotive industry began in the United States in the 1890s and is currently one of the largest markets in the world. With companies like Mitsubishi, Jeep, Honda, Chevrolet and Tesla all currently being based in the US, this is really no great wonder. And, it goes beyond just the vehicles. Vehicle parts and accessories are also imported and exported throughout the United States.

Furniture

Furniture Shipping - ShipKnox
Take a moment and consider all the furniture you have, whether at home or in your office. You either had it ordered online or you went directly to the store and bought it. Either way, the furniture and furniture parts had to be delivered one way or another. Furniture and furniture parts are the second industry to ship the most in the US. No matter how big or small, if you consider all the material that goes into building furniture, it’s not hard to imagine how they made our top five list.

Electronics

Electronics Shipping - ShipKnox

Whether you’re really into gadgets or just a necessary user, electronics play a big part in our everyday lives. Your new smartphone or tablet, the latest game console, all had to be shipped in parts coming from overseas and locally. The fully assembled device is then shipped to stores, after which you purchase on-site or online. If you purchase online, it then goes through another round of shipping before getting to the desired destination.

Coal

Coal Packaging - ShipKnox
Regardless of the fact that persons are trying to go the more environmentally friendly route by going electric, coal is still one of the most freighted items currently. Coal is still used to power many powerplants and is still used by many other industries worldwide. This freighted item is one that must be shipped very carefully due to the combustible nature of coal.

Produce

Produce packaging - Shipknox
According to the US Economic Research Service, Agriculture, food, and related industries contributed $1.109 trillion to the U.S. gross domestic product (GDP) in 2019, a 5.2-per cent share. America doesn’t only ship produce domestically, but internationally as well.
